Khenpo Jampa Yontan was born in Chabdo, Tibet, in 1978. He began his learning, reading and writing of Tibetan texts at a very young age. In 1995, he took ordination and entered the Drogon Drukgyal Choekhorling Monastery and began learning and memorizing the spiritual texts.

In 1996, he entered Khampagar Shedra (dialectical Institute) in Tibet and received many teachings such as the Preliminary transmission, Bodhisattva Avatara, Three vows, Madyamika, Abhidharma, Jenamnyi, Gyulama and etc. From the late Kyabje Adeu Rinpoche, he received the Getsul Ordination. During his vocation, he did his preliminary retreats.

In 1998, he went to Serthang Ngarig Nangten Lopling Monastery and received many teachings, empowerment and transmissions of Boddhistva Avatara, Great Perfection from the Great Bodhisattva Khenpo Jigmey Phuntsok Jungney. After that, he attended the Kagyu School Classes and learned Prajna Paramita, Madyamika, logics and etc from Khenchen Chimey Rigzin. Furthermore, he also received teachings from the Great Abbot Khenchen Tsulthrim Lodoe. Due to his persistence, diligence and great devotion towards the dialectical and other studies, he not only came out top in the class but also, was appointed as a secondary teacher in the Madyamika class.

In 2001, he came to India and entered Seraje Genyen Dialectical Institute and learned many texts such as three parts of lorig tarig duida, logics, pragyaparamita, grammar etc. Due to his continuous devotion towards debate and studies, he received many awards in the class.

In 2005, he entered Tashi Jong Khampagar Shedra (dialectical Institute) and as a teacher, he taught Duptha, Prajnaparamita, Bodhisattvacharyavatara, logics, madyamika and etc for many years. Besides, he also studied dulwa, abhidharma and grammar etc. In March 2009, he went to Bhutan and received full ordination of Drukpa Lineage from H.H. the 70th Je Khenpo Trulku Jigmey Chhoedak [the70th religious Head of Bhutan].

In November 2009, on the auspicious day of the Buddha's descending from Trayastrima Heaven, Kyabje Khamtrul Rinpoche Shedrub Nyima enthroned him as a Khenpo, in the presence of many great masters and yogis, at Khampagar Monastery, Tashi Jong.

In the Khenpo Degree, he was conferred with, has his story which reads:

Venerable Jampa Yonten of Khampagar Monastery has studied the five major texts of Buddhist philosophy and other major texts along with essential branches of learning related to the Buddha Dharma. With great devotion through the dual process of proper learning and contemplation, he completed his studies at the following monastic center of learning.Serthang Buddhist Institute [Tibet] Khampagar Monastic Institute [Tibet] Great Sera Monastic University [south India] and Khamgar Druk College [India]. Thereafter he taught the major texts of Buddhist philosophy and and helped in propagarion of major fields of study at Khagar Druk College for five years. In recognition of his excellence deeds and contribution towards the Buddha Dharma, I enthrone him as Khenpo [abbot] and confer upon him the Degree of Khenpo in this auspicious occasion of Buddha’s descent from the Trayastrima Heaven. I urge you to strive for the propagation of the Buddha Dharma which is the source of real happiness and wellbeing, in general, and the Glorious Drukpa lineage, the quintessence of Dagpo Kargyud tradition of Tibet Buddhism, in particular.
